Woodworking Math · Chapter 7

Compound Angles

Angles never add, slopes do. Two splays and a height in — your mitre, your bevel, and the leg length out.

Home › Calculators › Compound Angles

Enter both splay angles and the leg height, then press Calculate.
From the book — Chapter 7. tan(resultant) = √(tan²A + tan²B) — set the bevel here. tan(sightline) = tan B ÷ tan A — set the mitre here. Leg length = height ÷ cos(resultant).

The trap: two 5° leans do NOT make a 10° bevel — they make 7.05°. Everything stays in your browser — no sign-up, nothing stored.
