How it works

A ratio like 3 : 1 means 4 equal parts in all, 3 of one and 1 of the other. From a total, one part is the total ÷ the number of parts. From an amount you have, one part is that amount ÷ its parts. Each ingredient’s share of the whole is its parts ÷ the total parts, so 1 : 4 is 1/5, 20%, and 1 : 5 is 1/6, about 16.7%. A ratio by volume isn’t the same as by weight.

From the book, Chapter 11. 3 : 1 for 1 cup is 4 parts of 1/4 cup: 3/4 cup oil (about 177 mL) and 1/4 cup vinegar. With 1/3 cup of vinegar you need 1 cup of oil, 1 1/3 cups in all. 3 cups at 2 : 2 : 1 is 3/5 cup a part, the big ones 1 cup + 3 tbsp + 5/8 tsp; 450 g at 3 : 2 : 1 is 75 g a part. Tea at 1 : 4 is 20% tea; at 1 : 5, 16.7%. Every chapter and its calculator →

Amounts can be typed as 3, 0.75, 3/4, 1 1/2 or 1½. They’re worked as exact fractions and written as a cook measures them: cups in quarters or thirds, then tablespoons, then teaspoons to the nearest eighth. Everything stays in your browser: no sign-up, nothing stored or sent.
