How it works
“Of” means multiply, so 2/3 of 3/4 is 2/3 × 3/4 = 1/2. The amount is turned into teaspoons (48 to the cup, 3 to the tablespoon, 6 to the fluid ounce), then written back as cups in quarters or thirds, tablespoons, and teaspoons to the nearest eighth. Rounding loses (needed − rounded) ÷ needed: a small amount rounded to the nearest spoon can lose much more, in percent, than a large one.
From the book, Chapter 7. 2/3 of 3/4 cup is 1/2 cup; 1/3 of 1/4 cup is 4 tsp = 1 tbsp + 1 tsp; 2 1/2 × 3/4 tsp is 1 7/8 tsp. 2/3 of a 13.5 fl oz can is 9 fl oz = 1 cup + 2 tbsp, leaving 1/2 cup + 1 tbsp. 0.3 tsp rounded to 1/4 loses 16.7%; 2.1 cups rounded to 2 loses 4.8%. 0.45 cup of brown sugar is 7.2 tbsp, about 96 g. Amounts can be typed as 3, 0.75, 3/4, 1 1/2 or 1½. They’re worked as exact fractions and written as a cook measures them: cups in quarters or thirds, then tablespoons, then teaspoons to the nearest eighth. Everything stays in your browser: no sign-up, nothing stored or sent.
