How it works

The pound has been defined since 1959 as exactly 453.59237 g, and the ounce is a sixteenth of it, 28.349523125 g. To split decimal pounds into pounds and ounces, multiply the decimal part by 16 (1.6 lb is 1 lb 9.6 oz, not 1 lb 6 oz). A share of a package is the amount used divided by the amount in the package, both in the same unit.

From the book, Chapter 4. 8 oz of a 14-oz block is 4/7 of it, 57%, about 227 g. 1 lb 6 oz is 624 g; a kilogram is 2.205 lb, 2 lb 3.3 oz (93 g more than 2 lb). 340 g is 12.0 oz, 500 g 17.6 oz; 1.6 lb is 1 lb 9.6 oz. A drained can keeps 60% of its 425 g; 171 g is liquid. Every chapter and its calculator →
