One Jar, One Blend

Write the blend in parts once. Then any batch, from one gift jar to a market shelf, is one division and a few multiplications.

The blend, by parts (any unit: the parts only have to agree with each other)

A recipe in teaspoons? Convert it to grams (optional)

Enter the batch and the parts, then press Calculate.

The formula

  • One part = the batch ÷ the total parts
  • Each ingredient = its parts × one part
  • Jars the batch fills = batch ÷ jar fill, rounded down; left over = batch − jars × fill
  • Teaspoons to grams = teaspoons × the weight of one teaspoon (FDC; about, ±10 %)
The book's worked example, Chapter 1. The House Rub is 20 parts: smoked paprika 6, brown sugar 4, salt 3, garlic powder 2, onion powder 2, black pepper 1, cumin 1, chipotle powder 1. A 1,800 g batch makes one part 90 g: 540, 360, 270, 180, 180, 90, 90, 90 g. 24 jars filled to 70 g take 1,680 g; the other 120 g seasons the jerky marinade (43.7 g) and covers the spill.
Check it. The grams add back to the batch, and every ingredient divided by its parts gives the same one-part weight. If they don't, a part was typed wrong.

Honest limits. Spoon weights are approximate: they are FDC household measures, a level teaspoon varies by about 10 %, and salts differ a lot (table salt 6.0 g a teaspoon, Morton kosher 4.8 g). Weigh. A store-bought blend may already contain salt; read its label. Prices are illustrative US prices from October 2026, shown without a currency sign; put in your own.
