Weigh-in log: one bar, day and grams (the book's example log, Example 7.6)
Enter the loaf and press Calculate.
The formula
- Slice = (loaf length − both trims) ÷ bars; fresh bar = loaf weight × usable length ÷ length ÷ bars
- Cured bar = fresh bar × (1 − cure loss)
- Loss on day d = (day-0 weight − weight on day d) ÷ day-0 weight
- Label = the lightest bar, rounded down in grams; then ÷ 28.35 and rounded down again in ounces
The book's worked example, Chapter 7. The Market Batch loaf is 254 mm long: ÷ 10 = 25.4 mm slices. 1,390.6 g ÷ 10 = 139.06 g fresh; planned at 12 % loss, about 122.37 g cured. The lightest bar weighed 121.6 g, so the label says 120 g (4.2 oz).
The published curves are one soap's chart (Classic Bells, about 8.5 % by day 49, read by eye) and Kevin Dunn's small 33 % test bars (12.3 to 15.5 % by about day 60). Your soap will follow its own curve: weigh it. Prices are illustrative US supplier prices from October 2026, shown without a currency sign; put in your own.
