From the book — Chapter 6. A round pot holds π × radius² × height; a rectangular one holds length × width × depth. Both come out in cubic inches, so divide by 231 for gallons or by 1,728 for cubic feet. Wet potting mix runs about 55 lbs a cubic foot, which is what makes weight the real limit on a balcony rather than space. Minimum sensible pots: 1–2 gallons for herbs and lettuce, 3–5 for peppers, 5–10 for tomatoes, 10–15 for potatoes and squash.
1 gallon = 231 cu in = 4 quarts · 1 cu ft = 1,728 cu in ≈ 7.48 gallons. Uses π = 3.14, as the book does. Load limits vary — check your building's, and treat this as a rough guide only, not a structural assessment.
