A running total can only climb. Its slope is the amount each period, so a slowdown shows only as a bend.

How it works

The running total adds each period to the total so far. Its steepness is the per-period amount, so the honest companion is a bar for each period. A rolling average of k periods smooths the noise but turns late. For a goal, what’s left divided by the periods left is the pace needed; compare it with the latest period.

From the book, Chapter 12. The total climbs to 3,390 while the latest month is 65% of the best, 35% down. The fundraiser has raised 9,600; $2,400 in two weeks needs $1,200 a week, 2.4 times the latest. A 3-week average of bookings reads 44.3, 40.0 and 34.3 as the drop sets in.
