How it works
Percentage points are the plain gap between two percentages (15 − 10 = 5). Percent change compares the gap with the start ((15 − 10) ÷ 10 = 50%). A basis point is a hundredth of a point. Changes in a row multiply, so up 50% then down 50% leaves you a quarter below where you began, and undoing a fall takes a bigger rise than the fall.
From the book, Chapter 4. 10% to 15% is 5 points and 50%. 4% to 5% is 100 basis points, a 25% rise. $20,000 up 50% is $30,000, then down 50% is $15,000, 25% below the start, and needs 33.3% to get back. $100 down to $80 needs 25% to recover. Every chapter and its calculator →
