A rank keeps the order and throws away the gaps. Put the scores back and a big drop can turn out to be a hair.

How it works

An item’s rank is 1 plus the number of strictly higher scores. In a tight pack a fraction of a point moves it several places, so look at the gaps, and treat items within a margin as tied. A composite score is Σ weight × measure ÷ Σ weights; the weights were someone’s choice, and changing them can reorder the list. Points per game compares teams that have played different numbers of games.

From the book, Chapter 22. Millbrook is 9th on 70.4, inside a pack of scores less than two points apart. With weights 50/30/20 the three towns score 71.0, 69.5 and 73.0; with 20/60/20 Millbrook scores 80.0, and with 70/10/20 Fernhill scores 76.5. 22 points from 11 games is 2.00 a game; 20 from 9 is 2.22, on pace for 24.4 after two more.
