How it works

A rate is the count divided by the size, times whatever makes it easy to say (per 1,000 people, per 100 miles). The ranking by count and the ranking by rate can be opposites: the biggest place usually has the biggest count. Pick the size that matches your question, and plan with totals.

From the book, Chapter 5. Ashford lends 3.0 books a person and Fernhill 4.5. Potholes: Millbrook 10 per 1,000 people, Ashford 7. Route A has 0.5 flats per 100 miles and route B 1.0; per ride it’s 0.15 against 0.04. Every chapter and its calculator →
