How it works

The rise on the page is the change as a share of the axis range, times the chart’s height. Divide by the width for the slope, and the angle is the arctangent of the slope. Zoom the axis in, or make the chart taller and narrower, and the same change climbs steeper.

From the book, Chapter 7. The same 2% climbs at 0.3° on the wide slide, 10.6° on the zoomed axis and 50.0° on the phone. The reservoir’s 0.6-point dip fills 75% of its chart’s height. Every chapter and its calculator →
