Book 2 · Make It Add Up

Every Angle

Measure your home, plan your own security cameras and lights, and check any quote or install it yourself, with geometry, algebra and trigonometry: scale, area, Pythagoras, bearings, similar triangles, rearranging, sin, cos and tan, sectors, vectors and volume. Call each number before you measure it, then let the night walk keep score.

Who it is for

Not for: exam-syllabus coverage or proofs, or anyone who wants the plan without the arithmetic. It is never a substitute for an electrician, a roofer, a lawyer or the data-protection regulator where the book says so.

What you build: Measure, Cover, Price

One house and plot, surveyed to scale; a coverage plan of cameras, a doorbell camera and motion lights; a priced parts list used two ways. Every chapter hands it one number.

The game: every chapter ends with Call It (write the number before you measure) and Check It (the gap scores 3, 2, 1 or 0). A Quest Map tracks the eleven stations, the night walk earns a Coverage Score of Gold, Silver or Bronze, and a Trophy page holds the result. Twelve more home jobs are measured and priced at the end.

The house was worked out on paper from published figures, not surveyed by us: measure your own and walk your own plot at night. The book was written in collaboration with AI tools and reviewed by the author. Its numbers are checked by a verification program, and its figures are drawn by the same program, but mistakes may remain: see corrections & errata. Ladders at 4 : 1 and never on the roof; PoE and 12 V wiring only, mains work is an electrician's; cameras respect the neighbors' privacy. Coverage is a plan, not a promise.

Free tools for this book

Each calculator opens on the book's house and shows its formula, so you can check it by hand.

Calculator · Ch 1

Draw It First

Calibrate your pace, pace a wall, and turn real lengths into millimeters at 1 : 100 or 1 : 200, and back.

Calculator · Ch 2

What a Job Covers

Plot, footprint, drive, patio and open ground; a gable wall, gutters, fence and perimeters; a quote per m².

Calculator · Ch 3

Right Angles

Rafters and diagonals, the 3-4-5 square check, and the ladder at 4 : 1: the foot, the length and the angle.

Calculator · Ch 4

Where the Sun Rises

Sunrise and sunset bearings at the solstices, the noon sun's height, and the glare check for each camera.

Calculator · Ch 5

How Tall Is It?

Eaves and tree heights by shadows, one clinometer angle or two; whether the tree could reach the house.

Calculator · Ch 6

Pixels per Meter

px/m at any distance and the furthest distance to identify, recognize, observe and detect (IEC 62676-4).

Calculator · Ch 7

The Camera Triangle

Mounting height, tilt and view to the near blind spot, where the picture meets the ground and where a face enters.

Calculator · Ch 8

Coverage: Sectors and Circles

A camera's sector and arc, the ground it really sees once walls cut it back, drawn on the plan.

Calculator · Ch 9

Vectors and Routes: the Cable

Each run's legs to its length along the walls and in a straight line, slack, and the 100 m check.

Calculator · Ch 10

Storage: Days on the Drive

Bitrate to GB a day and days on the recorder's drive; PoE watts, kWh a year and the cost.

Calculator · Ch 10

Check the Quote

Equipment × (1 + markup) + labor against an installer's quote, line by line; markup and margin.

Calculator · Ch 10

The DIY Bill

Parts, cable in whole boxes, plugs, tools and the gap to a quote: what the installer is paid for.

Calculator · Ch 11

The Coverage Score

The night walk scored: identify at the door, no blind spot, the cameras planned: Gold, Silver or Bronze.

Printable sheets

The Quest Map, a 1 : 100 plan grid, a paper clinometer to print and fold, the coverage plan sheet, the quote-check sheet, the night-walk checklist and the Trophy page, on one page.
